Senior Data Engineer

Cervus are a Small Medium Enterprise (SME) company based in Wiltshire that has a growing reputation for developing novel and exciting processes and systems that support military and security clients.  We are experts in the delivery of experimentation, data capture and training exploitation.  We combine expert technical knowledge with on the ground military and security experience to address and understand potential problems before they become actual problems.  We are one of the very few organisations who can deliver true end-to-end capability development in the defence and security sector and are looking to expand.

What We Need:

  • You will be responsible for expanding and optimising our data and data pipeline architecture, data flow and collection for cross functional teams.
  • You will be an experienced data pipeline builder and data wrangler who enjoys optimising data systems and building them from the ground up.
  • You will support our software developers, database architects, and data scientists on project delivery to ensure the processes are coherent throughout. You must be self-directed and comfortable supporting the data needs of multiple teams, systems and products. The right candidate will be excited by the prospect of optimising or even re-designing our company’s data architecture to support our next generation of products and data initiatives.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture.
  • Assemble large, complex data sets that meet the project and or client requirements.
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimising data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
  • Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources including SQL, MongoDB, NoSQL and current cloud technologies.
  • Build analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights for the customers.
  • Be experienced with managing data security.
  • Create data tools for analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimising our product into an innovative industry leader.

Essential Skills

  • Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of other databases.
  • Experience building and optimizing ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures and data sets.
  • Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets.
  • Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency and workload management.
  • A successful history of manipulating, processing and extracting value from large disconnected datasets.
  • Working knowledge of message queuing, stream processing, and highly scalable ‘big data’ data stores.
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
  • A degree in in Computer Science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems or another quantitative field.
  • Experience with software tools including Hadoop, Spark, Kafka and Docker
  • Experience with relational SQL and NoSQL databases, including Postgres, Cassandra and MongoDB.
  • Experience with stream-processing systems: Storm, Spark-Streaming, etc.
  • Experience with object-oriented functional programming languages: Python, Java, C++, Scala, etc.
  • To work within and promote the company values and culture of Cervus.

Salary and Contract:

£45,000-£55,000 depending on experience. This is a 12 month fixed contract.

Location:

Flexible working arrangements but the main office is based in Porton Science Park in Wiltshire
