Senior Data Engineer

Cervus are a Small Medium Enterprise (SME) company based in Wiltshire that has a growing reputation for developing novel and exciting processes and systems that support military and security clients.  We are experts in the delivery of experimentation, data capture and training exploitation.  We combine expert technical knowledge with on the ground military and security experience to address and understand potential problems before they become actual problems.  We are one of the very few organisations who can deliver true end-to-end capability development in the defence and security sector and are looking to expand.

What We Need:

  • You will be responsible for expanding and optimising our data and data pipeline architecture, data flow and collection for cross functional teams.
  • You will be an experienced data pipeline builder and data wrangler who enjoys optimising data systems and building them from the ground up.
  • You will either have graduated at Bachelor or preferably at Masters level and have at least 4 years experience in high impact roles within multi-disciplinary teams or you will be working at an equivalent standard. This experience will have included roles leading teams as well as supporting teams.
  • You will support our software developers, database architects, and data scientists on project delivery to ensure the processes are coherent throughout. You must be self-directed and comfortable supporting the data needs of multiple teams, systems and products. The right candidate will be excited by the prospect of optimising or even re-designing our company’s data architecture to support our next generation of products and data initiatives. In addition, the right candidate will be able to harness the most progressive data science approaches to improve our solutions to existing challenges and to attack challenges we’ve not yet begun confronting.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture while mentoring Junior Data Engineers and other colleagues as necessary to build and develop our technology team which underpins our delivery.
  • Assemble large, complex data sets that meet the project and or client requirements from a wide variety of structured and unstructured data sources.
  • Build analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights for the customers using metrics, statistics and ML techniques.
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimising data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
  • Visualise the data on dashboards in a way the user can easily interpret the results and main insights.
  • Create data tools for analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimising our product into an innovative industry leader.

Essential Skills

  • As a minimum Bachelors degree in in STEM Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) field, and at least 4+ years of experience in mixed software and data engineering projects or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of other databases.
  • Experience building and optimizing ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures and data sets.
  • Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets.
  • A successful history of manipulating, processing and extracting value from large disconnected datasets using tools like Python, Docker, MongoDB, Kafka, Spark, NiFi, Java and C++.
  • Be experienced with managing data security.
  • To work within and promote the company values and culture of Cervus.
  • Ability to gain UK SC clearance.

Desirable Skills

  • Working knowledge of ML tools and algorithms applied to gain new insights and predictions
  • Working knowledge of message queuing, stream processing, and highly scalable ‘big data’ data stores.
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional, interdisciplinary teams in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience generating web based applications and visualisations using JavaScript,, Vue, Plotly,.
  • Previous experience in analytics settings.
  • Previous experience with UI/UX challenges.
  • Experience in other domains for delivering data analytics to customers.
  • Full UK Driving licence.

Salary and Contract:

£45,000-£55,000 depending on experience. This is 12-month fixed term with a view to going permanent

Location:

Flexible working arrangements but the main office is based in Porton Science Park in Wiltshire
